New Year 2024 is just around the corner. In the midst of the current tumultuous political situation, the tourism sector continues to show positive growth after Covid-19.

This of course cannot be separated from how President Jokowi issued the right policies so that they had a positive impact on the tourism sector.

There are at least 8 important policies that have been pushed by President Jokowi to advance Indonesian tourism.

The 8 Policies Are:

1. National Movement Proud to Travel in Indonesia

This movement was launched by President Jokowi as a form of appeal to invite more people to travel within the country.

This movement aims to boost the growth of domestic tourists to travel to tourist destinations in Indonesia.

2. Focus on improving destinations with infrastructure development in 5 DPSPs

The government is making improvements to tourism infrastructure facilities. No half-hearted, the budget reaches IDR 6.5 trillion. This budget is mainly intended to build infrastructure facilities, accessibility and amenities in 5 Super Priority Tourism Destinations (DPSP).

3. The right policy to overcome Covid-19 by turning the pandemic into an endemic

Jokowi’s decision to end the pandemic on June 21 2023 is the right step and provides momentum for economic recovery, especially in the tourism sector. This policy has an impact on increasing tourist visits and moving the community’s economic engine.

4. Encourage the Development of Halal Tourism

Through the development of halal tourism, it is hoped that we can maximize economic potential through balanced, open and fair investment and trade.

The development of halal tourism is directly proportional to the growth of the domestic halal industry. The government’s seriousness in developing halal tourism will have an impact on the growth of the halal industry in the country.

Indonesia’s achievements in halal tourism based on the 2023 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) report places Indonesia in first place as the best halal tourist destination in the world, beating 140 other countries. This achievement increased from the previous year which was in 2nd place and Malaysia occupied the top position.

5. Acceleration of Tourism Village Development

President Jokowi ordered regional leaders not to slow down the development of tourist villages. By traveling to villages, it will have an impact on household spending and local economic movements.

To support this, the government has demonstrated its commitment to development by providing village funds amounting to IDR 539 trillion by 2023 for 74,800 villages throughout the country.

Through the distribution of village funds, 326,000 kilometers of village roads, 6,400 village reservoirs to support irrigation, and 14,000 village markets have been built.

6. Improving the Quality of Tourism Human Resources

Improving the quality of human resources (HR), especially in the tourism sector, is a major factor in economic transformation.

The construction of tourism education support facilities ranging from vocational schools, Poltekpar to universities is aimed at preparing human resources in the tourism sector.

The development of superior tourism human resources has been able to open up tourism business opportunities and the widest possible employment opportunities.

7. Ordered the Establishment of a Tourism Endowment Fund (Tourism Fund)

President Jokowi ordered the relevant ministries to present a policy in the form of a special tourism fund to provide quality and sustainable tourism such as international class cultural, sports and MICE activities.

The Tourism Fund policy in Indonesia will be formed with good governance, prioritizing sustainable and quality tourism by highlighting domestic cultural excellence.

8. Visit Visa Free Policy

With this policy, it is hoped that it will increase the economic impact, tourist visits, increase the number of investments, and also attract activities, especially the digital economy.

It is planned that 20 countries will be granted visa-free visits, such as Australia, China, India, South Korea, the United States, England, France, Germany and several other countries which are the top 20 contributors of foreign tourists to Indonesia.

Apart from the 8 policy points above, the end of 2023 will be marked by the atmosphere of the Christmas and New Year holidays. Talking about the economic potential and circulation of money during the Nataru holiday cannot be separated from the estimated movement of domestic tourists (wisnus) which is estimated by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy to reach 200 million to 250 million people, so if this is multiplied by the predicted spending target for foreign tourists it will be around IDR 1 million to IDR 2 million per person , then that figure will reach IDR 250 T.

If this happens, there will be a very significant increase compared to the 2022 Christmas holiday which only saw 45 million Wisnus movements with a turnover of IDR 45 trillion.

This increase shows that tourism conditions in the era of President Jokowi’s administration continue to show increasingly better conditions. It could be said that even though we are currently in a political year, this does not discourage tourists from going on holiday.
